Depth Check
Before moving to Construction: have I faced my shadow?
Can I hold my own darkness without being consumed by it?
In short: Depth asks three things: an honest inventory of my hungers, a plan for pressure, and a map of the ripples my actions create. Without these, the shadow drives from the back seat.
The Three Requirements
Honest Shadow Inventory
Have I named my hungers, my capacity for harm, and my ego attachments? I know what I want so badly I'd compromise my values to get it. I know what someone could use to control me. I know where I need credit and where I can remain anonymous.
Pressure Readiness
Do I know what I will do when the pressure comes? I have identified my breaking points. I have a story that holds. I know who my emergency contacts are—people paid to be on my side. I can wait while the wave passes.
Ripple Awareness
Do I map the consequences of my actions before I act? I trace immediate, delayed, and emotional ripples. I identify witnesses I didn't see. I ask how this action will change how I see myself.
Counterfeit Depth
“I have ruminated endlessly and called it depth.”
Introspection without action is not depth. Mapping the shadow without changing behavior is intellectual entertainment. True depth changes how I walk.
True Depth
I have named my hungers, I know what I will do under pressure, and I trace the ripples of my actions. My self‑examination has produced concrete changes in how I operate.
The Antifragility Test
“Am I hiding from action in introspection? Has this self‑examination produced a single concrete change in how I operate?”
Depth is not about how much I think. It is about how my thinking changes my walking.
The Decision
Before I proceed to Construction, I ask myself honestly:
- Have I named my hungers and my capacity for harm?
- Do I know what I will do when the pressure comes?
- Do I map the ripples of my actions before I act?
- Can I hold my own darkness without confessing it, justifying it, or being consumed by it?
If I answered “no” to any of these: I remain in Depth. I cannot build something that matters while my shadow drives from the back seat.
If I answered “yes” to all: I am ready to build. Proceed to Construction.
