Exploration and Focus
Managing the pattern‑detecting function without letting it derail me.
How do I balance the need for novelty with the need for depth?
In short: My mind sees connections everywhere. This is a gift and a liability. Protocols make it a tool, not a tyrant.
The Core Insight
For the INTP 5w4 ASD‑1 mind, exploration (Ne) and focus (Ti) are both essential. Suppress exploration and you feel trapped. Suppress focus and you never build anything. The skill is knowing when to explore and when to commit, and having graceful ways to abandon paths that no longer serve you.
The Practices
Each practice is a focused investigation. Click through to read the full protocol.
The Idea Capture System
Where do I store new ideas so they don't hijack current focus? A single document or app. Two sentences: core insight, and condition for revisiting.
Read practiceThe Exploration Budget
How much time can I spend exploring before it becomes drift? Scheduled blocks. Timer set. Hard stop when the timer ends.
Read practiceMode Declaration
Am I in brainstorming mode or execution mode right now? Explicitly state it before beginning. The will to stupidity protects execution.
Read practiceThe Novelty Urge
Apply the 48‑hour rule before switching tasks. Write down the new task. Wait 48 hours. Reevaluate.
Read practiceInformation Diet
What inputs feed my pattern detection? Are they calibrated? Curate sources. Limit breadth. Depth and quality over novelty and volume.
Read practiceThe Creative Entry Protocol
How do I reliably enter a state of focused exploration or creation? Ritual: environment prepared, single task, timer, no interruptions.
Read practiceThe Counterfeit
“I have performed exploration and called it progress.” Exploration without focus produces scattered knowledge but no depth. If you never commit, you are not exploring — you are just avoiding the hard work of building.
