Foundation Check
Before moving to Depth: do I have a stable base?
Can I sustain myself without external rescue?
In short: The foundation stage asks four things: a controlled sensory environment, six months of savings, a credential‑free skill, and at least one non‑transactional relationship.
The Four Requirements
Sensory Sanctuary
Do I have a physical environment I control? Lighting, sound, temperature, and visual clutter are within my power to adjust. I have a space where I can reliably focus and recover.
Material Sovereignty
Do I have six months of expenses in accessible form? Not in retirement accounts or illiquid assets. Cash or equivalents that let me walk away without panic.
Skill Sovereignty
Do I have a skill that requires no credentials, only demonstrable output? Something I can do that the market values, that doesn't need a license, degree, or permission. A portfolio, not a diploma.
Relational Sovereignty
Do I have at least one non‑transactional relationship? Someone who would show up if I had nothing to offer. Not a network contact, not a mentor who benefits from me. Someone who walks with me.
Counterfeit Foundation
“I have isolated myself and called it sovereignty.”
Withdrawal is not stability. Isolation without resources is just hiding. True foundation means I can engage the world from a position of strength, not retreat from it permanently.
True Foundation
I have a sensory sanctuary, material security, a portable skill, and at least one person who shows up when I have nothing to give. I can face the world without panic.
The Antifragility Test
“Could I lose this and still walk? If my current arrangement collapsed tomorrow, would I have ground to stand on?”
Foundation is not about building a perfect life. It is about building a life that can survive disruption and still walk.
The Decision
Before I proceed to Depth, I ask myself honestly:
- Do I have a sensory environment I control?
- Do I have six months of expenses saved?
- Do I have a skill that doesn't need credentials?
- Do I have at least one non‑transactional relationship?
If I answered “no” to any of these: I remain in Foundation. This is not failure. This is accurate diagnosis. I cannot build depth on unstable ground.
If I answered “yes” to all: I am ready to face the shadow. Proceed to Depth.
