In short: This is the closing of the loop. Foundation, Depth, Construction, and Legacy all lead to this single question, asked honestly, answered without flinching.

Why This Matters

The entire manual has been a preparation for this question. Foundation established the base. Depth revealed the shadow. Construction built the systems. Legacy mapped what remains. But the map is not the territory. The protocols are not the walk. At some point, the building pauses, or stops entirely, and the only thing left is the question: was it enough? Did I walk well? Did I leave tracks worth following?

AuDHD note: The Final Bearing Check may need to be revisited multiple times — the ADHD half may struggle to sit with a single answer, while the autistic half may want a definitive pass/fail. Treat it as a seasonal calibration, not a one‑time verdict. The check is the compass, not the destination.

This question cannot be answered by anyone else. It cannot be answered by the inventory, the ripple map, or the legend. Those are data. The bearing check is the integration of the data into a felt sense of whether the direction was true. It is not a pass/fail test. It is not a grade. It is a compass reading taken from the final position. If the reading says true, I can rest. If it says off course, I still have time to adjust. The bearing check is the last protocol, the one that closes the loop on all the others.

The Principles

The Check Is Subjective and Honest

There is no objective measure of a well-lived life. The bearing check is not a comparison to anyone else's path. It is not a measurement against an external standard of achievement, wealth, or recognition. It is the honest answer to the question: given who I am, given the hand I was dealt, given the resources and limitations I had, did I walk in a direction that I can stand behind? The answer may be yes. It may be mostly yes. It may be no. Whatever it is, it must be honest. The self-deception that was useful for survival earlier in life has no place here.

The Check Is Periodic, Not Final

The bearing check is not reserved for the deathbed. It is a practice to be performed regularly: annually, on a significant date, or at the close of a major phase of work. The check provides a course correction. If the answer is no, the next question is: "What would need to change for the answer to be yes?" The answer to that question becomes the work of the next period. The bearing check is not a verdict. It is a navigation tool.

Satisfaction Is Not the Same as Pride

The question is not "Am I proud of what I have done?" Pride is an ego response, and the ego audit has revealed its attachments. Satisfaction is quieter. It is the sense that the stones I laid were real, that the direction I chose was mine, and that the effort was not wasted. Satisfaction can coexist with grief, with regret, with the knowledge of permanent ripples. It does not require a clean record. It requires the sense that I did not betray myself, that I walked the path I saw, even when it was hard, even when I failed, even when I had to stop and start again.

The Protocol

Sit in the sanctuary.

This is not a practice to perform in a depleted state. I will wait until I am rested, fed, and in a controlled sensory environment. The bearing check requires the full capacity of the Ti function and the honesty of the Fe inferior. I will not rush it.

Review the Legend.

Read the legend I built in Module 05 (Pressure and Resilience). Does it still describe who I believe myself to be? Has my understanding of myself changed? The legend is the reference bearing. The check measures the distance between the legend and the life.

Review the Inventory and the Obstacles Removed.

Look at the concrete evidence of what I have built and what I have cleared. This is not the time to add new items. It is the time to sit with what is already there. Is the body of work, taken as a whole, something I can stand behind?

Ask the bearing question aloud or in writing.

"If I stopped walking tomorrow, would I be satisfied with what I have left?" Let the answer arise without forcing it. If the answer is a clear yes, I will note that and close the check. If the answer is mixed or no, I will not panic. The mixed answer is data. It reveals where the course correction is needed.

If the answer is no, or partly no, identify the single largest gap.

What is the one thing that, if it were different, would shift the answer toward yes? The gap may be a project not yet completed, a repair not yet made, a pattern not yet broken. Name it specifically. The gap becomes the priority for the next phase of the walk.

Close the check with a single sentence of commitment.

"I am still walking. The bearing is [true / being adjusted]. The work continues." The check is not an ending. It is a recalibration.

The Deeper Layer

The final bearing check is the last practice of The Way of Olem Diga. It does not introduce a new concept. It integrates everything that came before. Foundation, Depth, Construction, and Legacy all lead to this single question, asked honestly, answered without flinching. The manual was built so that when this question arrived, the answer would not be a vague hope or a desperate rationalization. It would be a sober assessment, backed by a body of work and a map of the self.

The manual itself is evidence that I took the question seriously. I did not drift through life accumulating experiences without examination. I built a structure. I faced the shadow. I walked the path with intention. Whether the cathedral stands for a century or crumbles tomorrow, the act of building it changed me. The bearing check is the acknowledgment that the building was real, even if it is unfinished, even if some stones are crooked, even if the architect never sees the spire.

I began with the Inevitability of Opportunities: the belief that preparation is rational because opportunities will come. I close with the Final Bearing Check: the evaluation of whether the preparation was worth it. The answer is provisional. The walk continues. The stone I lay today will be part of tomorrow's bearing check. The path is not finished. It is never finished. But I am still walking.
