Pay the Cost of Maintenance acknowledged that everything decays and must be tended. This final practice is the test of all five. It asks the simplest, most demanding question: if I step away entirely, does the value continue to flow?

A system that requires my constant presence is not a contribution. It is a job I built for myself. It may be elegant. It may be profitable. It may be admired. But it is not a cathedral. The cathedral is defined by its independence from the builder. It stands. It serves. It persists. The builder's role shifts from operator to architect, from the one who does the work to the one who designed the structure that does the work. This shift is the final transition of the Construction stage. It is the movement from building to having built.
The Principles
The System Is Defined by Its Output, Not My Effort
The 5w4 defines value by the quality of the input: my thinking, my skill, my unique perspective. But a system is defined by its output, not its input. The question is not "Did I work hard on this?" The question is "Does this produce value for someone else?" If the value stops when I stop, the system was never autonomous. It was an extension of my own labor. Autonomy is the threshold. When the system produces value without my daily involvement, it has crossed from dependent to independent. It is no longer a project. It is a contribution.
The Shift From Operator to Architect Is Gradual
The Ti-Ne mind wants to jump to the finished state: the fully autonomous system, perfectly designed, requiring no further input. This is the completion trap applied to systems architecture. The shift from operator to architect happens incrementally. Each time I document a process, I shift one degree from operator to architect. Each time I delegate a decision, I shift another degree. Each time I build a redundant component, I shift another. The system does not become autonomous in a single redesign. It becomes autonomous through a thousand small shifts. The accumulation of these shifts is the construction of the autonomous cathedral.
The System Must Be Tended, Not Operated
A self‑running system is not a self‑unattended system. It still requires maintenance. But maintenance is distinct from operation. Operation is direct, continuous intervention. Maintenance is periodic, indirect stewardship. The shift from operator to architect is a shift from daily operation to periodic maintenance. The architect checks in, adjusts the design, and steps away again. The system runs. The architect ensures it continues to run. But the architect does not run it. This is the difference between steering and carrying. The architect steers. The operator carries. The cathedral requires steering, not carrying.

Diagnose the failures
Where did the system falter? What required your intervention? Each failure is a gap in the architecture. Document it.
Close one gap
Using the tools from the previous five practices—distance, compartments, redundancy, legibility, maintenance—design a repair that makes the system more autonomous. Implement it.
Repeat the test
Step away again. Observe again. Each iteration increases autonomy. The system runs more itself with each pass.
When the system passes the weekend test, extend the period
A week. A month. A quarter. The fully autonomous system is an asymptote: approached but never fully reached. The work of increasing autonomy continues. The cathedral always requires some steering. But the steering is light. The carrying is over.
The Deeper Layer
The autonomous system is the end of the Construction stage. It is the moment when the builder can stand back and say: "This is not my effort. This is the work." The 4 wing, which identifies the self with the work, will resist. The 5 wing, which fears losing control, will resist. The resistance is the sign that the shift is real. The cathedral can stand without me. I am no longer the engine. I am the architect. The work continues. My presence is not required for the value to flow. This is not abandonment. This is contribution.
